It has often happened that someone has come up to me at events saying that they really like the look of Twist and our available items, but they don't know what they are made of and what Disney has to do with anime. If you're the same way, I have a spoiler-free quickie!
Disney Twisted-Wonderland is a Japanese mobile game that was released in 2020 in its home country. It is still very popular in Japan, but it was only published in English two years later, in 2022. Currently, it is not officially available with us, but it can be downloaded from QooApp (https://m-apps.qoo-app.com/en-US/app/19361).
The game was originally intended for adult women, which is why the story has a more serious tone. The bond between the characters and the world building received significant attention. The "mother" of the program is Yana Toboso, who is responsible for the story and drawing, and is also the mangaka of Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji).
The app is a team-building strategy-rhythm game with gacha elements. You can draw all the characters from the gacha, and their development will be necessary for the battles, in addition, the music tracks in the story only require your sense of rhythm. The gacha is quite friendly, free draws are given on each character's birthday, and you can get your favorite later on the alternating banners.
According to the story, our main character gets carried away by a horse-drawn carriage and wakes up in a new world. This world is most similar to the world of Alice in Wonderland , where everything is different compared to the usual. Magic exists, technology is more advanced and characters in Disney movies are historical figures.
Our main character, or we, remain without magic, but we still win an invitation to the famous wizarding school, Night Raven College. The school follows the mentality of the seven Disney villains:
The festive seriousness of the Red Queen ( Alice in Wonderland ), the steadfastness of Zordon ( The Lion King ), the compassion of Ursula ( The Little Mermaid ), the cunning of Jafar ( Aladdin ), the efforts of the Queen ( Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs ), the diligence of Hades ( Hercules ), and Demona ( Sleeping Beauty ) nobility. All of Disney's misdeeds are remembered in history in such a way that they are set as an example to follow, only we will find out the truth.
Each of them has a house/house dedicated to them, in the same order: Heartslabyul, Savanaclaw, Octavinelle, Scarabia, Pomefiore, Ignihyde, and Diasomnia. These houses have their own colors, uniforms and rules, and they attend classes together with their own enchanted dormitories, their nerds, but each prefect is responsible for their students.
Since the school is morally questionable, its students are also extremely problematic, and our protagonist will be the bond that holds them together and weeds out their mental problems. The story goes from house to house, and this is how it was adapted into manga and novels. At the moment, the story is still in progress in the game, but we have already been promised an anime adaptation.
Its popularity was due to its continuous events, beautiful illustrations and music, and strong storytelling. You can identify with all the characters on some level, and unlike the usual, they are really deep characters. None of them are strictly stereotyped good guys, and the game often mirrors the usual shounen archetype as well.
